September 2002 to January 2003 (Democrat)
John J. Lombardi was born on April 30, 1952. He grew up in the DePasquale neighborhood of Federal Hill and tragically lost both his parents at an early age. Despite this hardship, he attended Mount Pleasant High School and earned both a Bachelor’s Degree (1975) and a Master of Secondary Education Degree (1982) from Rhode Island College. Lombardi graduated from Suffolk University College of Law in 1987.
After graduating from Rhode Island College, Lombardi worked as a teacher for several years and in 1984 was named Director of the Providence Recreation Department. That year he was elected to the City Council from Federal Hill’s Thirteenth Ward and during his eighteen years of service, Lombardi acted as chairman of a number of Council committees and was elected President of that legislative body in 1999. He became acting mayor on September 6, 2002 upon the resignation of then mayor Vincent A. Cianci, Jr. and held that office for less than four months. In 2003 he returned to his law practice and ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2010.
Lombardi has been active in a number of community organizations including the Federal Hill Neighborhood Association, the Federal Hill Knights of Columbus, the Italo-American Club, and Mt. Carmel Church. He currently lives on Grove Street in Federal Hill just blocks from childhood neighborhood with his wife Denise.
